3 teenagers drown while swimming in Surendranagar dam

 Three teenagers, who had gone missing while swimming in the Dholi Dhaja dam on the outskirts of Surendranagar district, were found dead with police saying they died due to drowning.

The Rajkot fire brigade and Surendrangar fire brigade recovered the bodies of Suresh Detroja (18), Tejas Kukadiya (17) and Mahesh Bhalgama (17) from the dam around 10:15 am Sunday, the police said.

“The trio had gone missing after they jumped in the Dholi Dhaja dam near the landing of Saurashtra Branch Canal of Narmada project on Saturday afternoon. The matter had come to light late on Saturday evening and a search and rescue operation was launched but to no avail. The search and rescue operation was halted at night but resumed Sunday morning. Eventually, the rescuers recovered their bodies,” RJ Jadeja, police sub-inspector in-charge of Joravarnagar police station, said.

Police said the victims were residents of Ratanpar village near Joravarnagar, which in turn, is part of the Surendranagar town. All of them were students, police said.

According to officers, the victims and their two other friends — Maulik Sheikh and Krishna Makwana — had gone on the bank of the dam for an outing. But while Sheikh and Makwana stayed back on the bank, Detroja, Kukadiya and Bhalgama jumped in the dam to beat the heat.

“The bodies of the victims have been handed over to their families after post-mortem,” PSI said, adding a case of accidental death has been registered at Joravarnagar police station in this connection.

Dholi Dhaja dam, also known as Wadhwan Bhogavo-II dam — the tail-end of Saurashtra Branch Canal of Narmada dam project, remains filled round the year even when other dams in the water-starved Saurashtra region generally go dry around this time of the year. The dam feeds Morbi and Botad branch canals of the Narmada project besides supplying drinking water to Surendranagar town and other nearby areas.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh ready for lie-detector test if Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat also agree to do so

 

BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh said on Sunday that he was ready to undergo a lie-detector narco test over allegations of sexual harassment levelled against him by female wrestlers. However, Singh put a condition that Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia and World Championship medallist Vinesh Phogat should also undergo the same test.

Earlier this month, protesting wrestlers had challenged Singh to undergo a lie-detector narco test if he was confident of his innocence after seven grapplers levelled sexual harassment charges against him.

“I am ready for my narco test, polygraph test or lie-detector test, but I have a condition that Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia should also undergo the same test. If both the wrestlers are ready for their tests, they should call the media and make that announcement. And I promise to them that I am also ready for it,” Singh said in a Facebook post.

The Delhi Police last month registered two FIRs against Singh, following complaints from seven female wrestlers, including a minor, alleging sexual harassment and criminal intimidation. After the registration of FIR, Singh had said he was “ready to face an investigation” but would not resign from his WFI post.

The BJP MP from Kaiserganj is staying away from political activities in Uttar Pradesh and he has restricted himself to Gonda, Ayodhya, Bahraich and Basti districts, where he is regularly meeting his supporters.
